PURPOSE:To compare a new, intensive and specialized early intervention programme (PAE-TPI) for incipient psychosis vs. standard treatment (ST), in terms of a set of performance measures grouped into 4 domains: appropriateness, continuity, effectiveness, and safety. METHOD:Naturalistic study of consecutive cases attended in PAE-TPI programme (n=255) vs. ST (n=95). Inclusion criteria: people in early stages of psychosis or considered to be in at-risk mental state (ARMS) according to CAARMS criteria; age 14-35 years; having less than five years of threshold psychotic symptom evolution; signed informed consent. A descriptive analysis was carried out, using the mean and median statistics for continuous variables and the frequencies and percentages to discrete variables(SPSS v.19). Paired t tests or Chi-square tests were used in order to compare performance measures of PAE-TPI vs. ST. RESULTS:There were statistically significant differences between PAE-TPI programme and ST in the proportion of patients receiving psychological treatment in the 1st year (72.9% vs. 33.7%; p<0.001), in ‘change score at 1st year’ in social GAF (13.6 vs. 8.8; p=0.028) and clinical GAF (14.3 vs. 8.3; p=0.004), and proportion of patients with active monitoring of medication side-effects (74.1% vs. 5-6%; p<0.001). There were no statistically significant differences in proportion of patients dropping out of services prior to completing 1 year (26.7% vs. 32.6%, p=0.756), this being lower in the PAE-TPI group. CONCLUSION:These results reveal improvements in care for patients in the PAE-TPI programme vs ST in relation to performance measures. Long-term follow-up should be conducted to see if these results are maintained or improved.
